In the Edo Period, / many Japanese plates and dishes /
were shipped to Europe. // <span class='nw'>Surprisingly</span>, / <i>[ukiyo-e]</i> prints were
used to <span class='nw'>wrap</span> them. // From the 1860s, / about ten years after
Hokusai died, / many <span class='nw'>painters</span> in Europe / became interested in
those <i>[ukiyo-e]</i> prints. // They found it new / that no <span class='nw'>shadow</span> was
drawn / and no subject was placed in the center. // They even
used these ways of drawing <i>[ukiyo-e]</i> / in their own paintings. //
This <span class='nw'>trend</span> is called “<span class='nw'>Japonism</span>.” //

<span class='nw'>Monet</span> is now known / as one of the greatest <span class='nw'>impressionists</span>. //
In the time of Japonism, / he was still young / and too poor to
get <i>[ukiyo-e]</i> prints. // One day, / he met a Japanese man, / Hayashi
Tadamasa. // Hayashi’s job was to buy and sell artwork. // He
liked Monet’s paintings / and wanted to exchange them / for the
<i>[ukiyo-e]</i> prints he owned. // Monet was happy to do so. // In fact, /
this exchange of pictures went on / for more than twenty years. //
The <i>[ukiyo-e]</i> prints he received / <span class='nw'>greatly</span> influenced Monet’s
painting styles. //

Monet had been looking for a
way / to paint the <span class='nw'>varying</span> lights / and
their <span class='nw'>effects</span> on objects. // <i>[Ukiyo-e]</i>
prints gave him a <span class='nw'>solution</span> . // He
thought / that working on a series
of paintings / would <span class='nw'>enable</span> him to
paint the changing light. // Then he
produced several series / such as
<i><span class='nw'>Rouen</span></i> <i><span class='nw'>Cathedral</span></i> and <i><span class='nw'>Waterlilies</span></i>. //
