The [twenty-six-year-old] mother / looked down at her son /
who was dying of leukemia. //
Her heart was filled with sadness. //
Like any parent, / she kept thinking about her son’s future. // She
wanted her son / to grow up and fulfill all his dreams. //
Now that
was no longer possible, / but she still wanted her son’s dreams
to come true. //

 • Para Play

She took her son’s hand and asked, / “Bopsy, / did you ever
think about what you want to be / when you grow up? / Did you
ever dream / about what you want to do with your life?” //
“Mommy, / I’ve always wanted to be a firefighter,” / he replied. //
His mother smiled back and said, / “Let’s see / if we can make
your dream come true.” //

 • Para Play

Later that day, / she went to the local fire department / in
Phoenix, / Arizona. //

Part-2

 • Para Play

She explained her son’s wish / and asked if it was possible /
to give him a ride on a fire engine. //

 • Para Play

Bob thought a while / about what he could do / and said, /
“Look, / we can do better than that. / Get your son ready / at seven
o’clock Wednesday morning. / We’ll make him an honorary
firefighter / for the whole day. / He can come down to the fire
station, / eat with us, / and go out on all the fire calls. / And, / if you
give us his sizes, / we’ll get a real fire uniform / made for him.” //

 • Para Play

Three days later, / Bob picked up Bopsy, / dressed him in his
fire uniform / and escorted him from his hospital bed / to the waiting
[hook-and-ladder] truck. //
Bopsy got to sit on the back of the truck /
when they went back to the fire station. //
He was in heaven. //

Part-3

 • Para Play

There were three fire calls in Phoenix that day / and
Bopsy got to go out / on all three calls. //
He rode in the different
fire engines, / the paramedics’ van / and even the fire [chief ’s] car. //

 • Para Play

Bopsy’s dream came true / because of all the love and
attention / that was given to him. //
He was deeply touched / by
what his parents and the firefighters did for him. //
He lived
three months longer / than any doctor thought possible. //

 • Para Play

One night / all of his vital signs began to drop dramatically, /
so the head nurse called the family members to the hospital. //
She believed / that no one should die alone. //

 • Para Play

She also called the fire chief. // She asked / if a firefighter in
uniform / could come to the hospital / to be with Bopsy. //

Part-4

 • Para Play

The chief replied, / “We can do better than that. / We’ll be
there in five minutes. / Will you please do us a favor? / When
you hear the sirens coming / and see the lights flashing, / will you
tell people / that there is not a fire? / Tell them / the fire
department is coming to see one of its finest members / one more
time. / And will you open the window in his room? / Thanks.” //

 • Para Play

About five minutes later, / a [hook-and-ladder] truck arrived
at the hospital. //
It extended its ladder / up to the open window
on the third floor, / and sixteen firefighters climbed up and into
Bopsy’s room. //
With his mother’s permission, / they hugged him /
and held him / and told him how much they loved him. //

 • Para Play

Bopsy looked up at the fire chief / and said, / “Chief, / am I
really a firefighter now?” //
“Bopsy, / you are,” / the chief said. //
Bopsy smiled / and closed his eyes / for the last time. //
