Grandpa lives all alone now. // His wife passed away
three years ago. //
Each morning, / he opens the hatch in the
floor, / baits his fishing hook, / and waits / until he’s caught his
breakfast. //

Up on the roof, / he grows a little wheat, / and keeps
a chicken / that gives him eggs. //
He buys fruit, / vegetables, /
and flowers / from the vendors / who come by / in their boats. //
Sometimes / he plays chess / with an old friend / who still lives in
the neighborhood. //
Grandpa’s children all live far away, / but
they often write, / and he enjoys reading their letters / over and
over again. //
At night / he listens to the sound of the waves / and
drifts off to sleep. //

One winter morning, / Grandpa awoke and found / that
the sea had risen even higher. //
The floor of his house / was now
a big puddle. //
He gazed at a picture of his wife / and sighed, /
“Well, / I guess it’s time / to build another new house.” //

 • Para Play

First, / he did some stretching exercises, / so as not to
strain his back. //
Then he set to work / up on the roof. // He laid
bricks / and built new walls. //
This used to be a lively town, / with
people of all ages / and walks of life. //
As time went by, / though, /
most of them gave up on their houses / and moved away. //

 • Para Play

Still, / Grandpa decided to stay. // It just wasn’t in him / to
give up. //

 • Para Play

The next morning, / when Grandpa was getting ready / to
go work on the roof, / he stumbled and dropped his tools. //
The
hatch in the floor was open, / and his hammers and saw and
trowel / all fell into the water / and sank to the floor below. //
“I’ll
have to go get them,” / he said to himself, / as he put on his
diving suit. //
