Part-1

 • Para Play

Have you ever heard of the lines and figures / of Nazca in
Peru? //
They are very large lines and pictures of animals / drawn
on the ground. //
They are over [1,500] years old, / but people only
discovered them / after planes began to fly over the region. //
That is because the pictures are too large / to see the whole
picture of the images / from the ground. //
Many people still
wonder / why such large drawings were made. //

 • Para Play

One German woman, / Maria Reiche, / studied the lines
and drawings for years. //
She believed / that each figure was
a symbol of the stars. //
She thought / all the figures together /
were a kind of calendar. //
Maria studied the mystery of
Nazca / for more than 50 years. //
However, / she only started
her study / by chance. //

Part-2

 • Para Play

When she was 28 years old, / Maria found an advertisement /
for a teaching job in Peru. //
Soon she decided to take the job / and
left for Peru. //
She was hopeful / about her job and the future. //

 • Para Play

In her first two years, / she enjoyed teaching children. //
However, / she had one unfortunate experience. // She injured her
finger badly / on a cactus. //
“Your finger is so bad / that I have to cut
it off,” / her doctor said. //
Maria lost one of her fingers. // Even after
the accident, / however, / she stayed in Peru. //

Part-3

 • Para Play

One day in 1941, / an American scientist told her / about
the large lines and figures, / which can be seen from an airplane. //
“Someone said that they were waterways. / However, / they must
be the symbols of stars,” / he said. //
She was interested in his
idea. //
She promised to visit Nazca / and to measure the figures. // This was the beginning of her [life-long] study. //

 • Para Play

In 1952, / Maria encountered a new figure / that determined
her life. //
She found the image of a monkey. // She measured it
carefully / and drew the entire image correctly. //
She was surprised /
when she noticed something about it. //
One hand of the monkey /
had only four fingers, / just like her hand. //
“Why?” / she wondered. // She asked people / who knew the old Nazca stories / about its
meaning. //
They told her, / “Nazca people believed / that people with
disabilities have a special power / to communicate with the gods.” //

 • Para Play

She looked at her own hands / and said to herself, / “Have
I been chosen / to uncover messages for the gods? / It must be
my destiny / to study the secrets / behind the lines and figures of
Nazca.” //
She felt this in her heart. //

Part-4

 • Para Play

It was surprising to her / that people in Peru did not
care / about the lines and figures of Nazca. //
People drove over
the lines / and damaged them. //
They even planned to build a
waterway / to grow plants in that area. //
The lines and figures
were in danger. //

 • Para Play

“I have to explain / the importance of the lines and figures /
to the people,” / Maria thought. //
However, / no one listened to her
words at first. //
She was only a German woman / who did not
have strong support from anyone. //
Maria guarded the lines / by
herself. //

 • Para Play

In the 1970s, / the government of Peru / finally made the
Nazca desert a special area. //
Everyone in the town of Nazca /
grew to love and respect the lady / who came from far away. //
Before she died in 1998, / she was given many honors. // One of
them was the title of Great Lady of Nazca. //
Thanks to her effort, /
the white stones in the Nazca desert, / which form the huge
figures, / will continue shining like stars. //
