<span class='nw land_readingTitle'>W</span> <span class='nw'>ade</span>  <span class='nw'>MacKinnon</span>, / a forest <span class='nw'>ranger</span>, / was hunting <span class='nw'>ducks</span> / around
Mermaid Lake / in <span class='nw'>Prince</span>  <span class='nw'>Edward</span> Island. /
In the <span class='nw'>bushes</span>, / he
found / that something was <span class='nw'>fluttering</span>. /
He approached / and found a silver
balloon / there. /
On one side / a picture of a mermaid / was printed. / He then
found a wet piece of paper / wrapped in plastic / at the end of its string. /

At home, / Wade opened the plastic wrap, / took out the wet <span class='nw'>note</span> / and
dried it. /
He said to his wife, / “Look at this, / <span class='nw'>Donna</span>.” / She <span class='nw'>unfolded</span> the
note / and read it: / “November 8th, 1993. / Happy Birthday, Daddy ….” /
At
the end / there was an address / for <span class='nw'>Live</span>  <span class='nw'>Oak</span>, / <span class='nw'>California</span>. /

“It’s only November 12th,” / Wade shouted. / “This balloon traveled
almost [5,000] km / in four days!” /
“And look,” / said Donna / while she
was turning the balloon over. /
“This is a Little Mermaid balloon, / and
it landed / at Mermaid Lake!” /
“We have to write to Desiree,” / Wade
<span class='nw'>exclaimed</span>. /
“Maybe we were chosen / to help this little girl.” /

<span class='land_readingTitle'>O</span>n January 9th, / Desiree’s fifth birthday came / and went quietly / with
a small party. /
Since they released the balloon, / Desiree asked her
mother / every day, / “Do you think / Daddy has received my balloon?” /
But
after her party, / she stopped asking. /

On the afternoon of January 19th, / her grandmother received / a
<span class='nw'>package</span> for Desiree. /
She looked at the return address / but didn’t know
the name. /
She opened the package / and found a letter. / “For a Dear
Daughter ….” /
Her heart beat. / <i>Dear</i>  <i>[God!]</i> / she thought. /
Desiree was seated / between her mother and grandmother. / Her
grandmother said, / “Desiree, / this is for you,” / and handed her the letter. /
“It’s from your daddy.” / “I know,” / said Desiree. / “<span class='nw'>Grandma</span>, / read it to me.” /
“Happy birthday from your daddy,” / she began. / “I guess / you must be
wondering / who we are. / Well, / it all started / in November. / My husband, /
Wade, / went hunting ducks. / Guess what he found? / A mermaid balloon /
that you sent your daddy …” /
Her grandmother stopped. / A single tear
began / to fall down Desiree’s <span class='nw'>cheek</span>. /
“There are no stores in heaven, /
so your daddy wanted someone / to do his shopping for him. / I think / he
picked us / because we live / in a town called Mermaid.” /

Her grandmother read on: / “Your daddy wants you to be happy / and
not to be sad. / He loves you very much / and is always watching over you. /
Lots of love, / the MacKinnons.” /
When her grandmother finished reading, /
she looked at Desiree. /
Desiree said, / “I knew / Daddy wanted to find a
way / to send me a message.” /
Then her grandmother pulled the Little
Mermaid book / from the package. /
