<span class='nw'>colon]</span>, / a <span class='nw'>dash</span>, / a <span class='nw'>parenthesis</span>, / and so on. /
For example, /
Emoticon 1 is a symbol / which means “smiling.” /
Emoticon 2 is a symbol / which stands for a “<span class='nw'>wink</span>.” /
Emoticon 3 shows a <span class='nw'>negative</span> feeling. /

emoticons are different / from Japanese ones. /
In the
English emoticons, / the faces are always <span class='nw'>sideways</span>. /
The eyes are on the left side / and the mouth is on the

mainly with mouth <span class='nw'>shapes</span>, / but Japanese ones do so /
