This is a short essay about names /

The other day, /

when I asked my students /
生徒にしてほしいと言ったとき
to explain their first names in English /
自分のファーストネームを英語で説明するように
in the class, /
授業で
some of them said /
何人かの生徒は言いました
that their names had no meaning, /
自分の名前には意味がないと
but just had good sounds. /
音の響きがいいだけだと
This surprised me /
これには驚きました
because I often hear /
なぜならよく耳にするからです
Japanese people have meanings /
日本人は意味があると
in their names. /
自分の名前に
Some students, /
何人かの生徒は
though, /
しかし
explained interesting stories /
興味深い話を説明してくれました
about their names. /

For example, /

a student whose name is Sho (翔) /
翔という名前の生徒は
said to me, /
私に言いました
“My name means /
「ぼくの名前には意味があります
I will prosper, /
ぼくは成功し
soaring on wings, /
翼を広げて空高く舞うという
because the Chinese character of Sho /
なぜなら翔という漢字には
has that meaning.” /
そういう意味があります」
Another student whose name is Urara (うらら) /
うららという名前のもう1人の生徒は
said to the class /
クラスのみんなに言いました
that her name comes from the Japanese word uraraka /
自分の名前は「うららか」という日本語から来ていると
meaning “bright and gentle /
明るく穏やか」を意味する
like spring sunlight.” /

For Westerners, /
欧米人にとって
this meaning aspect of Japanese names /
こうした日本人の名前の意味の側面は
can be fascinating, /
魅力的であり得ます
as it is a unique way /
