began to cut down cedars. /

They had a poor rice crop /

As a result, /

they had to offer boards of cedars /

as nengu (land tax). /

Fortunately, /

some cedars over 1,000 years old /

were left uncut then /

because they were not suitable /

for making boards. /

we can still see them /
そういった木も今なお見ることができるのです
as well as Jomon Cedar! /
縄文杉だけでなく

非常に残念ですが
that we can’t touch /
(縄文杉に)触れたりできません
or get close to Jomon Cedar. /
縄文杉に近づいたりすることもできません
We can only look at it /
見ていただくことしかできません
from a distance. /

many tourists stepped on the roots /
多くの観光客が根を踏んで
and damaged the tree. /
木を傷つけたからです
This fact makes us think /
