a strong typhoon hit Oshima Island, /

Stormy winds began to blow /

against the Kashinozaki lighthouse, /
樫野崎灯台に向かって
which stood on a steep cliff /
その灯台は険しい崖の上に立っていました
at the eastern edge of Oshima. /
大島東端の
In the evening, /
その晩
a big man rushed /
大男が飛び込んで来ました
into the lighthouse keepers’ room. /
灯台守の部屋に
He was all wet, /
男は全身ずぶ濡れで
covered with blood, /
血にまみれ
and clearly not Japanese. /
明らかに日本人ではありませんでした
The keepers soon understood /
灯台守はすぐにわかりました
that an accident had happened /
事故が起きたのだと
at sea. /
海で
“Whose ship are you on? /
「どこの船に乗っていたのだ？
How many crew members /
乗組員は何人
do you have?” /
いるのだ？」
“.......” /
「······」
The keepers couldn’t make themselves understood /
灯台守は自分の言うことを理解させることができませんでした
in Japanese. /

But it was dangerous work /

in the middle of a typhoon. /

Some villagers pulled the injured crew members /
村人たちの中には傷ついた乗組員を引っぱり上げる者もいました
