was a letter from an old Japanese man, /
Yamaguchi Tsutomu. //
“I was so moved /
by your speech in Prague. /
I’ll also spend the rest of my life /
insisting that the world stop keeping nuclear arms,” /
the letter said. //
Yamaguchi was the only person /
recognized as a survivor of two atomic attacks. //
He was on a business trip in Hiroshima /
on August 6, /
1945. //
On that day, /
an atomic bomb was dropped there. //
Although he was three kilometers away from the site, /
the top half of his body was burned. //
The following day, /
he caught a train home /
to get away from the bad experience. //
However, /
when he arrived at his home in Nagasaki, /
another bomb was dropped on that city. //
It was three days after the first bomb. //
He was telling his boss everything /
that had happened in Hiroshima. //
Suddenly, /
the same white light filled the room. //
“I thought /
the atomic cloud had followed me from Hiroshima,” /
he said later in life. //
