In Polynesian (Tahitian) folklore, there is an anecdote about twins, a boy and a girl, who ran away from their wicked parents. The boy was Pipiri and the girl was Rehua. Their father was Taua-tiaroroa and their mother was Rehua, who had the same name as the girl. The twins were called Pipiri ma together. Ma means "them and someone," and Pipiri ma means "the Pipiri and others."

It is said that the twins who ran away from their parents became stars and became the star Mu Scorpius. Scorpius Scorpii is a binary star, with the bright star in front being Pipiri and the dim star behind being Rehua, and when applied to Mu, Pipiri becomes Mu1 and Rehua becomes Mu2. Furthermore, the giant beetle (or stag beetle, some say) that flew with the twins on its back is Antares.
