Corona Borealis is one of the 48 constellation created by Claudius Ptolemy. It has an area of 179 square degrees and contains 35 stars that can be seen with the naked eye.
It is not a bright constellation, with only one second-magnitude star, but it has some features that make it easy to notice.
According to Ovid's Metamorphoses, the Cretan princess Ariadne was saddened by her abandonment by Theseus, and Dionysus, the god of wine, comforted her by throwing her crown into the sky.
In Hyginus's Astronomical Poems, the crown was placed in the sky at the wedding of Ariadne to Liber, the local fertility god.
